Household Formation for December 2011
January 31, 2012, The U.S. Census Bureau released their monthly estimates of households for the month of December 2011. The figure for December was 114,058 vs. the prior month estimate of 114,067 representing a month over month (MoM) change of (9). The Year-end 2010 statistic was 113,402 representing a YTD change of 656,000.
Household formation is needed to reduce the inventory of available housing units. The housing slump has reduced job creation, which has in turn reduced new household formation.
